Plasterboard manufacturer USG Boral has issued a warning to customers that some of their fire-rated plasterboard products may be contaminated with asbestos. The contamination affects fire-rated plasterboards containing vermiculite imported from China and was discovered in routine testing.
The incident serves as a timely reminder for the risks associated with imported building products, particularly those from China. The Australian Border Force website provides detailed information on the risks, typical products that have been found to be imported with asbestos and how to help mitigate these risks.
Every year in Australia, hundreds of people die from asbestos-related disease. This material was prevalent before the dangers to health were reported. It is now illegal to use it in any new products in Australia.
We at Effective Building and Consultancy can inspect the building before you complete the purchase, and help you plan for removal, or suggest means to manage the risks. Once the inspection is completed, our inspector will take samples to the lab and provide a report to show the location and condition of asbestos. If you have concerns or doubts about asbestos in your home, call us on (02) 9613 3353 and we can advise you on asbestos testing, maintenance, removal, decontamination, and disposal.
